About Us

It’s a funny thing, but Feather Edge / Close Board Fencing is one of the most rewarding things that I have done. You have to have done it to understand it, but there is nothing more satisfying than looking back at your well constructed fence and marveling at the transformation that you have brought about, either in your own or someone else’s garden.  It takes care and accuracy to get professional results.

Having put together many Feather edge / Close board fences myself, before starting each project I would cobble together a tool from off-cuts and anything I could find in my tool kit to enable me to space the boards evenly with a regular 1″ overlap.

These tools worked well, but I would often lose them and holding them between my teeth when hammering in the nails was never a good idea.

When I had a little time, I had a go at combining all of the requirements I had from this tool into an optimized design. It needed to be small, comfortable to hold and capable of being held with a nail in the same hand.

Now our protected design fits all of these requirements and we’re sure you’ll agree with us and the many others who have already bought our early versions on eBay and left us very positive feedback.

Using TidyFence Board Spacers:

Now, I’m not going to tell anyone how to build a Feather edge fence here as there are people out there with way more experience than me, but here’s how I intended TidyFence to be used:

Step one: After setting your first Feather edge fence board vertical with a spirit level and nailing it in position, you will have a good start point or datum.

Step two: Rest your next board on the gravel board and working at the lower end of the board first, hook the tail of TidyFence over the thick end of the datum feather board and offer up your next board until the thick edge of it rests against the stop of your TidyFence. With a nail between your thumb and forefinger, you can knock in the nail.

Step three: Move to the top of the board and as before, set the gap and put in the top nail, the board should now be perfectly spaced, with the correct overlap (25mm) and vertical.

Step four: Next proceed with the same method for the next, say 5 boards before checking again with the spirit level that the boards are still vertical.

If you have moved off vertical, then just reset your next board with the spirit level and carry on.

This is my guide and it may be useful if this is your first fencing project.

It would be great to get some pictures of fences that you have built with TidyFence and to get your feedback.
